Mysterious Witches’ Marks Discovered at Longleat, Unveiling a Dark History Just in Time for Halloween

As Halloween approaches, the historic Longleat estate in Wiltshire has revealed a mysterious connection to England’s superstitious past. Beyond its well-known ties to Shakespeare, with one of the rare remaining copies of his First Folio in its collection, Longleat holds yet another piece of eerie heritage—an ancient “witches’ mark.”

These marks, also known as “apotropaic symbols,” were believed to protect against witchcraft, demons, and misfortune, serving as ritual symbols etched into buildings for protection. At Longleat, this particular mark is subtly carved into the wall of the stable yard. James Ford, Longleat’s curator, explained, “The one at Longleat is very faint and difficult to see; it’s in a form known as a daisy wheel or hexafoil.” This geometric design, though seemingly simple, was thought to act as a powerful ward against dark forces.

Such markings, often found near windows, doors, and fireplaces—vulnerable points where evil was believed to enter—have been identified in buildings across England, dating from medieval times to the early 19th century. Ford added, “They are often found by doors, windows or fireplaces, which were seen as weak points where evil could enter.”

At Longleat, the discovery of the daisy wheel in the 19th-century stable yard adds a tantalising twist to its history. Ford remarked on the curiosity surrounding its unusual placement, noting, “As far as we are aware, this is the only one at Longleat. Why the stable yard and not on any of the other historic buildings is not known; a mystery often debated at Halloween.”

While today such marks are rare curiosities, in centuries past they reflected genuine fears of malevolent forces. For Longleat, this connection to historical superstition adds an extra layer of mystery, blending the literary world of Shakespeare with England’s dark folklore.

Visitors to Longleat this Halloween may find themselves wondering if they, too, have crossed paths with an ancient spell designed to keep witches at bay.
