M&S Town Centre closure confirmed for later this month

Marks and Spencer is proceeding with the closure of its town centre store, following consultations initiated in August when the retailer initially announced its intention to close the establishment.

A prominent sign has been recently displayed on the Regent Street store, confirming that the last day of operation will be October 28th. Notably, the cafe and Bureau de Change services will cease operations on Saturday, October 14th.

Expressing disappointment on social media, Councillor Jim Robbins shared his reaction, stating, “Really disappointing to hear that Marks & Spencer will be going ahead with their Swindon Town Centre store closure at the end of the month. We are determined to get Swindon town centre into a place where Marks and Spencer want to return.”

Public sentiment echoed this sentiment, with Born Again Swindonian Angela Atkinson expressing her disappointment, stating, “I’m gutted, I love this store.”

Although the consultation process appears to have concluded, the extent of staff redundancies resulting from the store’s closure remains unclear.

Other M&S branches in Swindon, including a clothes-focused store at the Designer Outlet and a Foodhall in Mannington Retail Park, will continue operations.

The company also plans to expand its large shop in the Swindon Orbital in collaboration with British Land.
