More newly-hired employees to be covered under furlough scheme

The governments Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which will cover 80% of workers’ pay up to £2,500 per month, will start to take applications from companies that have laid off workers next week.

Originally set out to support those employed on or after February 28th, it appears the cut-off date has now been extended to March 19th.

This move should see a further 200,000 workers paid.

Employers will need to have notified HM Revenue and Customs that a new employee was on the payroll through the Real Time Information (RTI) system by 19th March – the day before the scheme was first announced.

Employees added on the PAYE system after this date will not be covered.
