Minister supports Swindon Conservatives’ plans for town

Senior Government Minister David Lidington praised the local Conservative Group’s plans for Swindon during a visit to the town last Friday.

Mr Lidington, Minister for the Cabinet Office and one of Theresa May’s closest allies, joined local Conservatives on the campaign trail ahead of the borough elections on Thursday 3rd May.

He knocked on doors and met voters in Stratton and Old Town alongside Swindon MPs Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland, council candidates Roger Smith and Nick Burns-Howell and local activists.

The Minister was also updated on the significant progress the Conservative Group had made in delivering its Vision for Swindon, which focuses on 30 pledges by 2030.

Mr Lidington, who has been the MP for Aylesbury since 1992 said, “It was great to come to Swindon, speak to local residents about their hopes and concerns and discuss how the Conservatives can make their lives better,”

“The local Conservatives can be proud of their achievements in running the borough in recent years, especially around housebuilding, education and jobs, all while keeping council tax low.

“And it was interesting to hear about their plans for the future, including a focus on regenerating the town centre and continuing to manage the council’s finances in a responsible way.

“All their good work would be put at risk under Labour, as hard-left policies invariably lead to higher taxes, more debt, fewer jobs and worse services.”

Mr Lidington also attended a loneliness summit at Lawn Community Centre to offer his support.

The event, entitled Making Loneliness History in Swindon, was hosted by South Swindon MP Robert Buckland and Swindon Seniors Forum.
