We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Mike Bowden, a dear friend of The Swindonian and a true pillar of the Swindon community. We always cherished our conversations with Mike, whose passion and dedication to his causes were truly inspiring.
Mike Bowden, who chaired the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP), passed away after several months battling a debilitating illness. His tireless efforts through the charity have provided crucial aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion nearly three years ago. Under Mike’s leadership, the charity delivered life-saving supplies to those affected by the war and extended support to Ukrainian families who have found refuge in Swindon.
Mike studied law at Nottingham University before taking up a position with RWE Npower. He also served as Chairman of Lydiard Park Heritage Trust, CEO at Swindon Speedway, and was a director at Swindon Town Football Club. His commitment to local causes and his passion for preserving Swindon’s heritage and sporting traditions were truly remarkable.
In a heartfelt statement on social media, the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership shared: “Dear friends, It is with such a heavy heart that we are having to bring you the news that our dedicated and passionate Chairman, Mike Bowden, has sadly passed away after suffering for several months with a draining, debilitating illness. Our thoughts are with Sarah and family at this very sad time. We realise this may come as a huge shock to you – let us all take strength from each other and continue with the vital work that Mike dedicated himself to in the last three years. RIP our dear friend.”
Shaun from The Swindonian said: “Mike was not only a friend but a true inspiration. His passion for doing good, both within Swindon and beyond, was unmatched.
“Our thoughts are with Sarah and the family at this incredibly difficult time. He will be deeply missed, but his impact and legacy will live on in our hearts and through the causes he championed.”
Mike’s legacy will live on through the continued efforts of SHAP, which remains committed to the cause he held so close to his heart. His passing is a tremendous loss to the community, but his impact and spirit will never be forgotten.
