Matt Hancock says people will be able to enjoy ‘happy and free great British summer’

Swindonians will be able to enjoy “a happy and free great British summer” if the vaccine roll-out continues at its current pace, Matt Hancock has said.

Although the health secretary warned he expects there be a “tough few months” between now and the summer but speaking to BBC Politics East, said: “In six months we’ll be in the middle, I hope, of a happy and free great British summer.

“I have a high degree of confidence that by then the vast majority of adults will have been vaccinated – and that’s not just the clinically vulnerable groups, but all groups.”

England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty has previously warned some restrictions may have to return next winter.

“We might have to bring in a few in the next winter for example, that’s possible, because winter will benefit the virus,”

“That will give a high level of protection. The more people take up the vaccine the more we’ll be protected as a society…

“So I think we’re going to have a great summer but we’re going to have a tough few months between now and then,” he said.
