Sezwin Crasto, a 22-year-old man from Broad Street, Swindon, has been sentenced to 21 years in jail for the attempted murder of his girlfriend.
The verdict was delivered by the Bristol Crown Court on the 27th of July, following a four-day trial.
During the trial, the jury heard chilling details of the sustained and brutal assault Crasto launched on his girlfriend on the evening of 21st March 2022. The horrifying attack occurred after she informed him of her desire to end their relationship.
In a fit of rage, Crasto used a knife to slash her face and neck, inflicting life-changing injuries upon her. Although he admitted to a charge of wounding, he was found guilty of attempted murder in the end.
Judge William Hart, in his sentencing remarks, described Crasto as a “controlling, jealous, and possessive boyfriend.” He noted that Crasto’s actions were intentional, aimed at disfiguring the victim and inflicting harm rather than outright killing her. The jury’s verdict explicitly confirmed his intent to kill her with the throat wound.
Crasto will have to serve at least two-thirds of his 21-year sentence.
Detective Constable Victoria Barker, from Swindon CID, shed light on the victim’s plight, stating that she had endured a year of controlling and possessive behavior from Crasto. He had isolated her from her friends and made threats, leaving her feeling trapped in the relationship.
On the day of the attack, when she expressed her desire to break up, Crasto reacted violently, causing severe injuries that left her unable to speak. Fortunately, she received exceptional surgical care in the months following the attack, enabling her to regain her voice.
Apart from the physical scars, the victim also faced significant mental trauma. Despite the challenges, she displayed immense courage in cooperating with the investigation.
Detective Constable Victoria Barker urged victims of domestic abuse, including those facing controlling and coercive behavior, to seek help and support. She assured them that they are not alone and that assistance is available.
