Man Jailed for Life for Murder of Swindon Grandfather

Paul Warren, a 25-year-old resident of Victoria Road, Old Town, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years for the murder of Swindon grandfather Martin Brown.

The heinous incident occurred on January 27th, 2022, when Warren violently attacked 54-year-old Martin while he was walking home in the Beechcroft Road area. The attack left Martin with severe injuries, and several hours later, an off-duty paramedic spotted him on his way to work and rushed him to the hospital in his own vehicle.

Tragically, Martin’s injuries proved fatal, and he passed away 11 days later.

Initially charged with robbery, Warren pleaded guilty to the charge in a previous hearing. Subsequently, he appeared in court again this month, facing a charge of murder, to which he entered another guilty plea.

Today, the judge delivered a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years for the murder and an additional minimum term of four years for the robbery, to run concurrently.

Martin’s sister, Gail, provided a personal impact statement to the court, expressing how the horrific events of last year have forever changed their family. She expressed her devastation and urged no one else to endure such tragedy, emphasising that Martin was a good man, beloved by many, and deserved a peaceful and full life.

In a heartfelt tribute to her late father, Martin’s daughter, Natalie, described the inhumane circumstances of his death and celebrated his selfless nature, sense of humor, and love for his family. She highlighted the void left in their hearts and the lasting impact of his kind and caring nature.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker provided insights into the tragedy, revealing that Martin’s fateful encounter with Warren was entirely random. Warren initiated a violent and sustained attack on Martin, forcing him to hand over his wallet and bank card PIN through repeated punches to the head.

The attack left Martin seriously injured, and despite attempting to continue on his journey home, he eventually collapsed due to the severity of his injuries. CCTV evidence played a crucial role in identifying Warren as the perpetrator, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.

DCI Walker said “Violence of this severity will not be tolerated and we are committed to reducing violent incidents within our county and creating safer public spaces so people do not feel fearful when out and about in Wiltshire.

He also paid tribute to Martin’s family, “I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Martin’s family who have had their world turned upside down by Warren’s actions. Despite this, they have acted with dignity throughout this ordeal. Martin was a father and had grandchildren who he had not yet met but had plans in place to do so. Sadly, these young children will never meet their grandfather as a result of Warren’s abhorrent actions. My thoughts are with Martin’s family at what continues to be an incredibly difficult time.”
