Man charged following armed robbery at Morrisons in Swindon

Wiltshire Police has confirmed that a man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery at the Morrisons store on Penhill Drive, Swindon.

Matthew Softley, 53, of Western Street, Old Town, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (20 September), where he was remanded into custody. He faces charges of robbery and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

The charges relate to an incident on 26 August, when a man entered the supermarket at around 6.25am armed with a knife. He threatened a member of staff before leaving the store with alcohol.

Following an appeal and the release of CCTV images, police say public assistance played a key role in identifying the suspect.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said:

“We would like to thank the public for their help in identifying Softley after we released images as part of the investigation.”

Softley remains in custody pending further court appearances.
