There’s a new ripple on the waters of Longleat, and it’s not just the Jungle Cruise boats making the splash. Four hefty newcomers – Matylda, Manon, Lola and Hodor – have begun stretching their legs and exploring their new paddock beside the estate’s Half Mile Pond.
The hippos, who arrived at the Wiltshire attraction back in June, have already been turning heads from the water. Guests have spotted them wallowing and surfacing in the outdoor pond, but now the adventurous quartet has started venturing onto dry land, giving visitors even more to talk about.
Darren Beasley, Longleat’s Head of Animal Operations, explained that the process of settling them in has been a careful one.
“We are gradually introducing them to their surroundings and each other,” he said. “As they all come from different places, it’s important to take our time. They’ve met nose-to-nose, and they’re getting used to one another’s scent before becoming a full group. They’ve already been enjoying their indoor and outdoor pools, and we’re rotating access to the field as part of the process.”
It is hoped that by next month the pod will be regular fixtures in Half Mile Pond, visible to those taking the Jungle Cruise boat trip – one of the highlights of the day ticket.
For those looking to add a little extra fun to their visit, Longleat’s Summer Carnival continues until 31 August, bringing fairground rides, workshops and a festival atmosphere to the grounds.
So, whether you fancy a lazy boat ride past some of the estate’s most impressive residents or a spin on the waltzers, there’s plenty to keep both the young – and the not so young – entertained.
