Councillor Oliver Donachie, Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, has announced plans to cut the cost of some residential parking permits in the Town Centre and Old Town parking zones. Councillor Donachie made his announcement following a review of parking services that was completed in December 2017 and a motion at Council on 25th January 2018.
Councillor Donachie said, “I am delighted to be taking this proposal to cut parking to cut the costs of permits in Old Town and the Town Centre less than a pound a day.
“At Full Council I will be proposing the following cuts to parking charges within the Town Centre and Old Town zones of the residents’ parking scheme. We will cut the annual permit from £625 to £299 – more than halving it. .
Councillor Donachie explained that this was the latest proposal in a suite of policies that were about using Swindon’s car parks to support businesses, workers, residents, and visitors. Other changes have included a marginal rise in some fees to pay for extra cleaning and security for the multi-storey car parks.
“In order to help those who are sleeping rough, I have also ensured that money has been allocated to pay for additional homelessness outreach support,” he added.
Cllr Renard, Leader of the Council said. “The majority Conservative Group is fully supportive of the work Councillor Donachie has done and will be backing his proposal wholeheartedly at the Council meeting.
