Local Apprentices Celebrated for Their Contribution to Key Road Construction Project in Swindon

Buckingham Group Contracting is recognising the outstanding work of two local apprentices, Josh and Francisco, in the construction of Swindon’s Southern Connector Road (SCR) ahead of the upcoming Apprentifest.

Supervising the project and utilising computer-aided design (CAD), the apprentices have impressed Swindon Borough Council with their skills. The apprentices’ success comes ahead of the upcoming Apprentifest event, where students, parents, and anyone interested in apprenticeships can explore the opportunities and learn about the apprenticeship experience.

This initiative highlights the commitment of Swindon Borough Council to support apprenticeships as part of its Community Wealth Building program.

Reflecting on his journey, Josh Baker, a Level 4 (flexi) Construction Apprentice, expressed his satisfaction with finding his calling in the construction industry saying “School wasn’t for me and engaging was hard, but I always knew I wanted a job in the construction industry.

“I started off as a labourer for Buckingham and was then offered a role in the site supervisors department as an apprentice. It’s broadened my outlook and given me greater confidence, communication, and time management skills.”

Francisco Cerda Pereya, also a Level 4 (flexi) Construction Apprentice, emphasised the value of choosing an apprenticeship, highlighting the practical experience and growth opportunities it offers. “I’m so glad I picked to do an apprenticeship – it’s a proper job with real prospects and I get to spend a lot of my time in work with leading engineers and doing quality assurance tasks. I’ve really grown in the months here at SCR and I’m really enjoying it,” he said.

Councillor Chris Watts, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport at Swindon Borough Council, commended the apprentices’ contribution to impactful infrastructure projects and invited individuals interested in apprenticeships to attend Apprentifest at STEAM Museum. The event will provide a platform for prospective apprentices to engage with various organisations and explore potential vacancies.

Prospective attendees can register for STEAM’s Apprentifest, scheduled for June 7th, via the EventBrite page: www.eventbrite.com/e/apprentifest-swindon–tickets-627063552967.

This event promises to provide valuable insights into the world of apprenticeships and connect aspiring apprentices with organisations eager to support their journey.
