Liden Man Jailed for Nearly Four Years Following Reckless Arson Attack in Swindon

A man from Swindon has been jailed for three years and nine months following a shocking series of offences, including a reckless act of arson which could have ended in tragedy.

Craig Day, 36, of Liden Drive, appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Wednesday 8 May, where he pleaded guilty to arson with recklessness while the weather posed added danger, criminal damage, and threatening a person with an offensive weapon or corrosive substance.

The offences stemmed from an incident that took place on 24 November 2024 on Caulfield Road in Swindon, during what police described as a deeply disturbing altercation. CCTV footage captured Day confronting a fellow resident whilst holding a knife, making threats before lunging at the victim. Thankfully, the knife did not make contact.

As the confrontation escalated, the victim fled to his bedroom. In a chilling turn of events, Day was seen pouring lighter fluid on the staircase before setting it alight. The flames were reported by a member of staff, and the incident was swiftly contained, largely thanks to the flame-retardant nature of the carpet.

PC Charley Wilmott, of Team 1A Swindon Response, said:
“I am very pleased to see that Day has been held accountable for his actions. This was a very serious incident in which Day could have seriously or fatally injured the victim.
“The confrontation was reported to the housing association and was captured on CCTV. We can see that Day’s victim retreated from him before he tried to stab him.
“Day can be seen to pour lighter fluid on the stairs and continue to try to create a fire. Luckily, the carpets were flame repellent.
“This sentence will give him plenty of time to consider what he did and how the outcome could have been far worse for everyone concerned.”

The court also ordered Day to pay a £228 victim surcharge.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a moment of aggression can spiral into something potentially fatal. While no one was physically harmed, the trauma and danger faced by those involved will linger far beyond the sentence handed down.
