In a display of artistic talent, pupils from Lawn Manor Academy have emerged victorious in a competition hosted by The Brunel shopping centre to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
As part of the celebration, schools across the town were invited to participate by crafting artwork envisioning the state of the natural world in 50 years, embellishing one of the pillars at The Brunel.
Lawn Manor Academy seized this opportunity, extending the competition to all pupils in years 9, 10, and 11 as an extracurricular showcase of their graphic design prowess. The school, having recently introduced a new GCSE in Graphic Design, witnessed impressive talent among its students.
From an internal competition, four standout pupils were selected as the winners: Year 10 and 11 students Keona, Sarah, Will and M.D. These talented individuals collaborated to bring their collective vision to life, creating the final artwork now proudly on display within The Brunel.
Competing against artworks from four other schools – King William Street CE Primary School, Lethbridge Primary School, Commonweal School, and The Ridgeway School – all five pillar artworks were presented for a public online vote. Lawn Manor Academy’s creation, drawing attention to the oceans’ plight due to pollution and humanity’s impact on the natural world, triumphed with 144 votes.
The winning quartet, along with their dedicated teacher Emma Mills, were honoured with a hamper of art supplies, graciously presented by Laura Bracey, Administrator at The Brunel.
Emma Mills, Head of Graphics at Lawn Manor Academy, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “Our pupils really embraced the competition and we received over 60 entries from those studying Graphics and DT. It was a challenge to shortlist them down to the final 4 but we chose the entries that showed the best use of graphics skills and who embraced the brief. We are very thankful for this opportunity and look forward to entering again next year if the competition continues!
Mills continued, “The final artwork that they’ve then worked together to produce is an engaging and eye-catching piece that highlights the need for everyone to consider how we’re treating the natural world in order to continue enjoying it for generations to come.”
The artwork is displayed on pillars outside of Something Different, Supercuts, Eurochange, High Score and Blue Banana.
