Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has confirmed the introduction of new legislation to rectify convictions of sub-postmasters affected by the notorious Post Office Horizon scandal.
The announcement follows a compelling call by Sir Robert Buckland, Member of Parliament for South Swindon, urging for immediate action to overturn wrongful convictions and expedite compensation for those impacted.
Sir Robert, expressing the urgency of the matter, posed a question to Minister Kevin Hollinrake on Monday, suggesting the use of emergency legislation to address the miscarriage of justice faced by hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters.
“As the sheer scale of the miscarriage of justice that has befallen hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters continues to shock our country, it is clear that such an exceptional situation requires an exceptional solution,” he said.
Acknowledging the profound impact on victims and their families, Sir Robert asserted, “Too many sub-postmasters have already died without seeing justice being done, so there is no more time to be lost.” Following discussions with the Lord Chancellor, Sir Robert ensured his concerns were conveyed to Parliament, ensuring the swift passage of legislation.
In today’s announcement, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak affirmed the introduction of primary legislation to promptly exonerate and compensate those convicted due to the Horizon scandal. Sir Robert welcomed the news, stating, “Today’s announcement by the Prime Minister confirming that new legislation will be introduced is welcome news. Those who have suffered have done so for way too long.”
The primary legislation, expected within weeks, will comprehensively annul all convictions based on erroneous Horizon evidence and the alarming conduct of the Post Office during the specified period. This decisive action aims to clear names and open the path for innocent individuals to receive a minimum compensation of £600,000.
As the nation awaits this crucial legislative intervention, Sir Robert Buckland continues his unwavering advocacy to ensure justice is swiftly served for those entangled in the Horizon scandal.
