King Charles to celebrate his 74th birthday today

King Charles III is set to celebrate his first birthday as monarch today.

Although he is expected to mark the special day privately, with no public events planned, there will be a number of military gun salutes in his honour.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, a mounted ceremonial unit in the British Army, will be firing 41 volleys from midday at London’s Green Park before the Band of the Scots Guards perform Happy Birthday.

At around 1pm, the Honourable Artillery Company, which is the oldest regiment in the British Army, will fire a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London.

The Band of the Household Cavalry, the largest military band in the UK, will also perform Happy Birthday for him during the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

There is also expected to be gun salutes by the Royal Navy in Portsmouth.

Will the King have two birthdays?

Since the 1700s, starting under under King George II’s reign, monarchs with a non-summer birthday would officially celebrate on the date of the yearly Trooping of the Colour parade, a tradition that continued after his reign.

The Queen, who was born in April, also had two birthdays – her official public celebration held in June each year to tie in with the famous parade.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the same routine will be followed by the new King.
