Keeping Warm Together: Swindon’s Welcome Spaces Provide Community Comfort in Chilly Weather

As the chilly weather persists, 43 Welcome Spaces have opened their doors across the Borough, offering warm havens for residents seeking solace and connection.

Welcome Spaces, scattered throughout Swindon, serve as inviting community hubs, welcoming everyone irrespective of their background. These spaces aim to foster connections and support, providing an open chair for individuals to sit, chat, and share with fellow residents.

Sinead, a young mother attending with her daughter, appreciates the opportunity to engage with the community. She says, “It is nice to get out and about and make connections in the community. It is important to have conversations with different people. The space offers the chance to do this, as well as good company and good food.”

Norris, another guest, highlights the energy-saving aspect of these spaces, saying, “It’s good because it offers the chance for people to get out whilst saving energy, as well as meeting new people.”

Councillor Jim Grant, Cabinet Member for Communities and Joint Working, talked about the welcoming nature of all 43 spaces saying, “All of our 43 Welcome Spaces offer a warm welcome to residents, providing a place for people to enjoy a chat with others in the community and keep warm.”

The amenities in each venue vary, with some offering hot drinks, free Wi-Fi, additional support with the cost of living, opportunities for activities, and free internet access, computers, and charging points.

Grant encourages residents to explore the options available, stating, “I encourage residents to get out and explore the options that are right for them.”

Importantly, visitors are not required to disclose their reasons for being there and are under no obligation to participate in any activities if they prefer not to.
