As we enjoy the festive season our single-use plastic usage is going to be a lot higher than other times of the year.
Research shows that during the Christmas period waste can more than double and the majority of this is plastic from gift wrapping and packaging.
In the UK we go through more than 40 million rolls of (mostly plastic) sticky tape every year, and use enough wrapping paper to go around the Equator nine times.
Along with this around 125,000 tonnes of plastic wrapping used for food is discarded over the festive period.
Plastic Free Swindon and Keep Swindon Tidy are teaming up to hold Swindon’s first Keep Swindon Tidy Day on 2nd January 2021!
Inspired by Clean Up Australia, this will be a day to tidy up the area where you live in either a socially-distanced and COVID-safe community litter pick, or by doing your own litter pick.
Make 2nd January the start of your New Year’s resolution to keep Swindon tidy; to love where you live, to care for nature, and keep Swindon looking beautiful.
Many community groups have already signed up. Please contact us to add your group / yourself to the list.
Full details, including a COVID-safe litter picking guide, are on the Plastic Free Swindon website.
