A new law will come into force next Friday, July 24th – Wearing a face mask is compulsory in England’s shops and confined spaces.
The new law which is enforceable by the police could see you face a fine of up to £100 if you fail to follow the rules.
The government has so far been reluctant to enforce the wearing of face coverings and some senior government advisers are also warning that face coverings can give people a false sense of security and lead to over-reliance on “ineffective homemade masks” rather than thorough hand hygiene.
This has left many people asking why now? we are four months into the pandemic.
When does the law come into force?
Friday July 24th.
What if I don’t wear one?
People breaking the law will be handed a £100 fine, reduced to £50 if paid within a 14 days.
The fine will be enforced by the police with shop workers and business owners being asked to encourage customers to comply.
What can I use as a face covering?
Face coverings are not the same as face masks.
The Government has said coverings can be made from scarves, bandanas or other fabric items, as long as they cover the mouth and nose.
Who is exempt?
Children under 11 and people with certain disabilities and breathing conditions will be exempt from wearing a face covering.
Exceptions will also include anyone who is being relied on by a deaf person for lipreading; police or public transport staff and emergency services.
