In a tribute to the 75th anniversary of the National Health Service (NHS), Swindon’s Central Library will join other renowned local landmarks coming alive with a captivating light display.
The historic Roman Baths in Bath, Swindon’s Central Library, and Salisbury Cathedral will be adorned in a mesmerising shade of NHS blue on Wednesday, July 5, commemorating the remarkable milestone of the health service.

Sue Harriman, Chief Executive, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board, said: “People have always been at the heart of the NHS and I know so many people have the NHS in their hearts, which is why I hope residents in our region will join me in sharing an enormous sense of pride when these iconic local landmarks go blue on Wednesday 5th July.
“For 75 years, the NHS has been a constant aspect of our everyday lives, and something we have all relied upon at one time or another.
“I’m sure that people in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire going about their everyday lives will see these anniversary light displays and be warmly reminded of their own experience of the NHS, and how it has cared for them and their families over the years.”
Residents throughout the region are warmly invited to witness the illuminations on the anniversary day, providing an opportunity to reflect on their personal experiences with the NHS. Established on July 5th, 1948, the NHS revolutionised healthcare by becoming the world’s first service to offer free medical assistance when needed.

Cllr Jim Robbins, Leader, Swindon Borough Council, said: “I’m delighted that we will be supporting this cherished service on its 75th anniversary by lighting up the Central
Library blue, and I would encourage everyone to get involved in NHS75 by volunteering, supporting NHS charities or by giving blood.”
Over the past 75 years, the NHS has experienced tremendous growth, currently serving approximately one million individuals each day in 2023. Additionally, this month holds another celebration as the integrated care board for the region, alongside similar bodies across the country, marks its first anniversary since its establishment.
At precisely one minute past midnight on July 1st, 2022, the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board commenced its operations. This milestone signified the successful transition from the region’s former clinical commissioning group, assuming responsibility for delivering over £1.5 billion worth of healthcare services to local residents. The primary objective of the integrated care board has been to enhance the coordination and integration of various care providers operating within a specific geographic area.
