Iceland open for elderly only for one hour – just not in Swindon, yet!

An Iceland Foods store has made an announcement that they will be opening an hour early to the elderly so they can make purchases during the coronavirus pandemic.

The supermarket in the Kennedy Centre, West Belfast, announced it would let older customers inside from 8-9am starting Tuesday.

A statement on Twitter said: “Iceland Foods will be opening their store between 8-9am for the elderly commencing Tuesday 17th March.

“Could the wider public please respect this hour, and understand that this time is allocated for elderly people only.

An Iceland spokesman said: “This is a local initiative. It is currently our intention to allow our stores to take their own decisions on how best to meet the needs of their local communities.”

Britain’s food retailers appealed to shoppers over the weekend to stop panic buying during the coronavirus outbreak, saying purchasing more than they need would mean others will be left without.

The letter, signed by Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Coop, Waitrose, M&S , Iceland, Ocado and Costcutter, was published in adverts in national newspapers and share on social media. ‘We understand your concerns but buying more than is needed can sometimes mean that others will be left without. There is enough for everyone if we all work together,’ the letter said.
