From 10th November 2024, the European Union is introducing the Entry/Exit System (EES), a new automated passport control process that aims to modernise travel into the EU.
While the goal of EES is to streamline border checks, the reality might be slightly different, especially during its initial phase.
Swindon’s very own independent travel agency, Swindon Travel Hub, has given us the lowdown on the new System. The EES will affect anyone planning to visit EU countries, bringing in a modern, biometric-based system to replace the traditional manual passport stamping.
The idea behind the EES is simple—speed up border checks by collecting biometric data like fingerprints and facial scans the first time you travel to the EU. On future visits, these details will be automatically checked against your passport.
But what does this mean for your holiday?
Ashley Hunt, the Director at Swindon Travel Hub, has some advice:
“While the EES will eventually make travel smoother, we’re expecting delays at ports and airports, particularly during the initial launch phase. If you’re planning on booking a holiday for later this year, it’s worth considering destinations outside the EU to avoid the potential hold-ups or timing your trip to miss the busiest periods.”
The system aims to improve efficiency in the long run, but travellers may face longer queues at the start as biometric data is collected. Swindon Travel Hub has highlighted that the Port of Dover and Eurostar terminals could see particularly long waits, with some EU countries more prepared than others for the roll-out.
What Countries Will Be Affected?
The new EES system will apply to all countries in the EU’s Schengen Zone, including holiday hotspots like France, Spain, and Italy. Popular non-EU countries like Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland will also implement the EES. However, countries such as Ireland, Turkey, and Cyprus are outside of this scheme, providing alternative options for those looking to avoid the delays.
What Can Travellers Do?
Swindon Travel Hub is advising anyone with travel plans after 10th November to be prepared for potential delays. Here are some tips to help:
- Check your passport: If it’s close to expiring, consider renewing it now to avoid repeating the biometric process after you get a new one.
- Travel light: Taking hand luggage only can help speed up your journey through the airport.
- Avoid peak entry points: Airports and ports like Dover are expected to face the longest delays, so you might want to consider different routes or times.
Ashley Hunt also noted: “If you’re looking for a stress-free holiday, consider visiting non-EU destinations or booking your trip for later in the year, once the system has had time to bed in. Our team is here to help you choose the best option to suit your travel plans.”
Looking for an EES-Free Getaway?
For those who prefer to avoid the hassle altogether, Swindon Travel Hub recommends holiday spots unaffected by the new system, such as Turkey, Egypt, or Ireland—all within a short flight from the UK and offering the perfect escape from potential delays at the EU borders.
