Shrove Tuesday, the Christian holiday that is traditionally observed on the day before the start of Lent.
One of the most popular traditions associated with Shrove Tuesday is the eating of pancakes, which is why the day is often referred to as Pancake Day.
Pancakes were traditionally made on this day because they were a good way to use up rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting period of Lent began.
Here is a simple recipe for making pancakes:
Ingredients:
100g plain flour
2 large eggs
300ml milk
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or melted butter, plus extra for frying
Pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl, make a well in the center, and crack the eggs into the well.
- Whisk the eggs and gradually incorporate the flour, adding a little bit of milk at a time until you have a smooth batter.
- Add the oil or melted butter to the batter and whisk again until it is well combined.
- Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat, and add a small amount of butter or oil to the pan.
- Use a ladle or a small measuring cup to pour a small amount of batter into the pan, and quickly tilt the pan to spread the batter evenly.
- Cook the pancake for 1-2 minutes, or until it is golden brown on the bottom.
- Flip the pancake over using a spatula, and cook the other side for a further 1-2 minutes.
- Transfer the pancake to a plate, and repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding more butter or oil to the pan as needed.
- Serve the pancakes hot with your choice of toppings, such as lemon juice, sugar, fruit, or syrup.
Enjoy your delicious pancakes!
