Rishi Sunak revealed last week that eating out throughout August would become cheaper with the government picking up 50% of the bill up to a maximum of £10pp.
The scheme will start on August 3rd and run through until August 31st.
Mr Sunak said “To get customers back into restaurants, cafes and pubs and protect the 1.8 million people who work in them, for the month of August, we will give everyone in the country an Eat Out to Help Out discount.
“There are 1.8 million people work in this industry. They need our support. With this measure we can all eat out to help out.”
The discount can be used an unlimited amount of times in August on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will only count towards meals eaten out, so you’ll still have to pay full price if you order takeaway.
The discount can be applied to food and non-alcoholic drink purchased to consume in the restaurant or cafe. You are also eligible to 50% off of your non-alcoholic drinks order even if you are not eating.
The treasury have also confirmed that the discount can be used alongside any other discount schemes such as TasteCard and Meerkat Meals however the 50% government discount will be applied on the final bill after all other discounts and vouchers have been applied.
Businesses looking to take part in offering the discount will need to be Food Standards Agency approved and will have to register with the scheme on Gov.uk before being able to offer the discount.
Locations that are able to offer the discount include:
- restaurants
- cafés
- public houses that serve food
- hotel restaurants
- restaurants and cafes within tourist attractions, holiday sites and leisure facilities
- dining rooms within members’ clubs
- workplace and school canteens
Major restaurant chains including Nando’s, Prezzo, Pizza Hut and Wagamama have announced they will be registering to offer the discount and it is expected that all national chains will do so.
