A government scheme allowing Brits to open their own homes to Ukrainian refugees officially opens today with the over 150,000 people registered to help.
Homes for Ukraine allows Brits to act as sponsors for Ukrainians who have no family ties in this country, providing accommodation for at least six months, with refugees who have found a sponsor able to apply for a space from today.
Under the scheme, those offering homes to refugees would receive a thank you payment of £350 a month, for up to 12 months. This cash will not affect your benefit entitlements or council tax status.
Hosts should commit to providing free accommodation for at least six months – and must not charge refugees rent. There is no requirement for the host to provide food or living expenses for your guests – but you can if you wish to.
Refugees will have access to healthcare, benefits, employment support, education, and English language tuition and will be able to live and work in the UK for up to three years.
