Hobbycraft launches free Bayeux Tapestry colouring sheets as historic artwork goes on display

Children and families can explore one of Britain’s most famous pieces of history through a new set of free Bayeux Tapestry colouring sheets launched by Hobbycraft.

The craft retailer has released the printable designs to coincide with the Bayeux Tapestry going on public display at the British Museum from 10 September, giving children a creative way to discover the story behind the Norman conquest of England.

The tapestry, which dates back almost 1,000 years, depicts the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, including some of the best-known figures and scenes from the period.

Hobbycraft’s colouring sheets have been inspired by characters and scenes from the historic artwork. They are available to download free and can be printed at home or used by schools, clubs and other groups.

The retailer says the resource is intended to combine creativity with history, giving children an accessible way to learn about the events depicted in the tapestry while producing their own interpretations of the artwork.

Hobbycraft Artisan Eliott Bulpett, who designed the sheets, said: “I designed something that makes this incredible piece of history feel accessible and fun for everyone.

“The colouring sheets bring some of the tapestry’s most recognisable scenes and characters to life, giving children a creative way to explore the story behind the Battle of Hastings while having a bit of fun along the way.”

The original Bayeux Tapestry is being displayed at the British Museum in London from 10 September 2026, bringing the medieval artwork to the UK for public viewing.

The tapestry is around 70 metres long and tells its story through a sequence of embroidered scenes, providing a detailed visual account of the events surrounding the Norman invasion of England and William the Conqueror’s victory over Harold Godwinson.

The free Hobbycraft colouring sheets are aimed at children of all ages, but the retailer says they can also be enjoyed by adults interested in history and crafts.

The sheets can be downloaded from Hobbycraft’s website.
