99-year-old army veteran Captain Tom Moore who set out to raise £1,000 for the NHS has now received more than £12 million in donations.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock described Captain Tom Moore as “an inspiration to us all.”
Mr Moore, who lives with his family in Marston Mortaine, Bedfordshire, decided to fundraise for the NHS by walking the 25-metre lengths of his garden 100 times ahead of his 100th birthday.
Speaking to ITV he said “It really is unbelievable that that sort of money is coming and is still coming in and probably every day brings a little bit more.
“I think people realise how well the National Health Service is doing, the service that they’re providing.”
There is now an online appeal for people to help Captain Tom Moore celebrate his 100th birthday by sending him a birthday card.
Cards can be sent care of the Post Office to:
Captain Tom Moore, C/O Post Office Limited, 67 Bedford Road, Marston Moretaine, MK43 0LA.
