In the 18 months since Russian forces embarked on their incursion into Ukraine, the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP) has encountered a number of kind and generous individuals and organisations.
In a recent turn of events, SHAP’s Chair, Mike Bowden, was taken aback by an unexpected phone call that held the promise of assistance. The call originated from Merlin Court Care Home, nestled in the heart of Marlborough, extending an offering of an extensive array of essential medical supplies, including continence products, blankets, and other much-needed medical supplies.
Mike Bowden, upon receiving the news, expressed his heartfelt sentiments, “It is truly heartening to know that the needs of everyday Ukrainian people are still at the forefront of local people’s minds. The ongoing conflict might not always dominate the headlines, yet the intensity of the strife continues to escalate, exacerbating the hardships faced by millions across Ukraine.”
Alice, Jan, and Kieron, integral members of the Merlin Court Care Home team, opened up about their rationale and commitment to this noteworthy cause. Alice shared her perspective, stating, “It’s great for us to get involved and and help with this cause . We see how the people of Ukraine are suffering and what them to know we care about them all.”
Jan echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the multifaceted impact of their involvement, “I feel like I’ve achieved something-not only meeting and helping members of the community but also the wider world . I was excited about the collection for the Ukraine appeal and we were well supported by family members at Merlin Court who brought in a wide range of things.”
Kieron chimed in with his own perspective, recounting a heartwarming experience, “I was pleased to help out and enjoyed bringing one of our residents to help with the sorting of donations at Marlborough Football Club . It gave her her real pleasure and made her feel connected with the local community . Both SHAP and Hungerford based HUGS do such great work -it’s been a real pleasure to work with them both.”
