Great Western Academy opens its doors

Great Western Academy is pleased to announce that the school’s official opening will take place on Monday 22nd October 2018. The event will take place at 11am when Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE, British space scientist and educator will be opening the new academy.

Great Western Academy is the newest secondary school in Swindon and is the first new secondary school in the area for more than a decade. The Academy opened in September 2018 with a cohort of 150 Year 7 children and will grow to 1200 students, including a Sixth Form planned to open in September 2019. The school was opened under the free school initiative and was sponsored by New College Swindon. The fantastic facilities were designed by architects Scott Brownrigg and built by BAM Construction and provide accommodation including a theatre, sports hall, dance studio, drama studio and specialist science and technology rooms. The outdoor space includes a beautifully landscaped social space, multi- use games area and extensive playing fields.

The event will be attended by those who have been involved in the opening of the Academy including leaders of Swindon Borough Council, BAM Construction, New College and Justin Tomlinson MP. The opening will include short talks from a variety of guests including Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Graham Davis, Principal of GWA, as well as performances from students.
