Ghostly Goings-on in Longleat House This October

Longleat House is preparing to reveal its eerie side this October Half Term, as the ever-popular Ghost Tours return during the estate’s Great British Autumn celebrations.

The Elizabethan stately home, built between 1567 and 1580, is steeped in history—and, if stories are to be believed, it remains home to more than just its grand architecture and fine collections.

Guides will share spine-chilling tales of Longleat’s most famous resident spirit, Lady Louisa Carteret—better known as the Grey Lady—who is said to wander the corridors in search of her lost lover. Visitors will also hear of strange happenings, from doors slamming when no one is near, to the disembodied voice of a young girl, and even sudden wafts of lavender that appear without explanation.

Emma Finlay of Longleat said:

“Visitors will find out more about those who have made themselves known, from doors which slam when no one is near, to the voice of a young girl heard as we close the house, as well as random lavender aromas; it’s definitely a tour for all the senses.”

Scott Ashman, Head of Operations at Longleat, added:

“We are delighted to be bringing back Ghost Tours to Longleat House following feedback from guests. These tours won’t be for the faint-hearted, with plenty of scares along the way. Guests should keep this in mind when booking, as they are designed to be scary but entertaining.”

The Ghost Tours run four times daily between 25 October and 2 November, offering a seasonal thrill during Half Term. Tickets are priced at £9.95 per person, and must be booked as an add-on when purchasing admission via longleat.co.uk.

Please note: tours are unsuitable for children under 11 or visitors with limited mobility.
