South Swindon Constituency Labour Party formally launched their 2017 General Election campaign yesterday morning with a rally for Labour members and supporters at Park South Community Centre. Established members and new supporters turned out to hear from their new Parliamentary Candidate, Sarah Church.
Sarah called on activists to volunteer to support her in winning the campaign to unseat Conservative Robert Buckland. She said “we have five weeks to change the next five years”. Sarah said that the constituency needed a “strong constituency MP who could be relied on to put Swindon’s needs first as the country enters Brexit negotiations, someone who will not simply fall into line if jobs and opportunities are threatened here. There are 10,000 jobs in Swindon across all sectors that are reliant on access to the single market, and these jobs are at risk if we crash recklessly out of the EU as Mrs May would have us do. We need a good deal for Swindon”
Sarah drew on her strong track record of public service, firstly her 13 years in the Army, then her campaign record in Swindon to save the libraries last year. Sarah said that “Swindon needs a representative in Parliament with integrity, who will hold the Prime Minister, whoever that is, to account on behalf of the town.”
Sarah was joined by former MP for South Swindon, Anne Snelgrove, and former Churchfields pupil, Heidi Alexander, who is defending Lewisham East for Labour.
