Former Wiltshire Special Constable’s Conduct Leads to Dismissal Verdict

In a recent scrutinisation at the Wiltshire Police Headquarters, a former Special Constable, Gavin Cox, was found to have committed acts of gross misconduct, a hearing concluded on the 2nd of April.

The one-day session, presided over by an Independent Legally Qualified Chair, established that Cox’s behaviour grossly violated the expected professional standards for police officers.

Had Cox not preemptively resigned from his position, the outcome of the hearing would have led to his immediate dismissal without notice. The panel meticulously examined four serious allegations against the former officer, including the development of an inappropriate emotional relationship with an individual known as Female A, failure to document interactions with Female A and Male A, neglect in recording potential domestic violence and criminal offences, and the misuse of police data concerning the said individuals on the 17th of May, 2022. The hearing upheld all allegations against Cox.

Chief Constable Catherine Roper voiced her concern over the incident, stating, “Mr Cox’s actions undeniably undermine the trust and confidence our community places in us as their police force.” She emphasised the force’s dedication to eliminating such conduct, asserting that behaviour of this nature has no place within Wiltshire Police, whether from employed staff or volunteers.

To combat and prevent misconduct, Wiltshire Police has introduced the Safe2Say Anonymous Reporting System as of December. This innovative platform encourages officers, staff, and volunteers to confidentially report any instances of wrongdoing, fostering a culture of integrity and inclusivity. Chief Constable Roper urged both police personnel and community members to utilise this tool if they observe or experience any concerning behaviour.

The force’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of conduct and fostering a positive, supportive environment is evident in their proactive measures. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ethical behaviour within the police force, ensuring that Wiltshire remains a safe and trustful community.
