In the wake of the latest KPMG CEO Outlook indicating that 64% of global leaders anticipate full-time office returns by 2026, workplace creation expert Unispace highlights the need for a thoughtful approach. The firm urges employers to engage in dialogue with their workforce and reconsider workspace dynamics before enforcing widespread returns.
Unispace’s “Returning for Good” report, a comprehensive analysis based on a survey of 9,500 employees and 6,650 employers across 17 countries, reveals critical insights. The data indicates that 58% of workers find it challenging to focus on their core tasks in the office, citing distractions and excessive meetings as primary reasons.
The data also revealed that 29% of businesses that had already mandated office returns faced recruitment challenges, while 42% experienced higher-than-usual staff attrition rates. Lawrence Mohiuddine, CEO EMEA at Unispace, interprets this data as a signal that employees may seek alternative opportunities if compelled to return to an unproductive office environment:
“While advocating for a return to the office aligns with business interests, there must be a clear understanding of why employees haven’t naturally gravitated back to the workplace and what changes they desire in their work environment. Our data reveals a lack of productivity in the traditional office setting, explaining the preference for a hybrid work model.
“Considering the difficulties firms encounter in attracting and retaining talent during ongoing skill shortages, it’s crucial for leaders to comprehend the unique preferences of their workforce. Adapting to these preferences is key to fostering meaningful changes. Today’s workspace needs are drastically different from those of a few years ago. Employees, accustomed to working in both quiet spaces and collaborating online, are reevaluating how and where they work. Rushing into a five-day office return without understanding employee preferences may adversely impact attraction and retention efforts.”
As businesses navigate the evolving landscape of work, Unispace emphasises the importance of aligning office strategies with the changing needs and expectations of the workforce to foster a successful and sustainable return to the workplace.
