A magical season of Christmas events is coming to Lydiard Park, promising festive fun, creativity, and community spirit for all ages this winter.
Christmas Lights Switch-On

Festive Decor at Lydiard House Museum
Throughout December, visitors can experience the splendour of Lydiard House Museum decorated for the season. The elegant state rooms will be filled with floral arrangements, a real Christmas tree, and a traditional kissing ball. Guests can enjoy a self-guided visit or book a special guided tour with cream tea.
Santa v Rudolf Run – 7 December
Get ready for a friendly festive race in the Santa v Rudolf Run on Saturday, 7 December. Participants can walk, jog, or run 3km or 5km to raise funds for charity. The event welcomes all ages, including dogs and pushchairs.
Carols by Candlelight at St Mary’s Church

Festive Paint & Sip – 10 December
On Wednesday, 10 December, unleash your creativity at Lydiard Park Hotel’s Festive Paint and Sip. Participants will paint a serene winter scene with step-by-step guidance, while enjoying a festive drink from the bar. No artistic experience needed!
Ghost Stories at Lydiard House – 12 December
For something a little darker, visitors can gather on Friday, 12 December to hear spine-tingling ghost stories in the atmospheric Lydiard House Museum. Expect tales of the grey cowled figure, the silent drummer, and Sir John St. John — reviving a centuries-old Yuletide storytelling tradition.
Meet Santa – 14 December
Younger visitors can meet Santa Claus himself at Lydiard Park Hotel on Sunday, 14 December. The event includes festive crafts, family photo opportunities, and an early Christmas gift from Father Christmas.
Christmas Parties & New Year’s Eve Celebration
Lydiard Park Hotel will host a series of Christmas Party Nights featuring a welcome drink, traditional Christmas dinner, dessert, and a disco — all for £55 per person. Smaller groups are welcome to join the shared party nights.
To close out the year, the New Year’s Eve Party promises an evening of elegance and celebration, complete with fizz, canapés, a gourmet dinner, and dancing until midnight.
Councillor’s Comment
Cllr Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said:
“Lydiard is a magical location all through the year, but it has something extra special at Christmas. There’s something for everyone — from families meeting Santa to those who love a cream tea with a touch of history or a festive ghost story. Anyone looking for Christmas activities in a beautiful setting should check out Lydiard this winter.”
