Driver Caught Speeding at 106mph on M4 Motorway

The Wiltshire Roads Policing Unit pulled over an MG driver who was clocked driving at a staggering speed of 106mph. The driver’s excuse? Claiming to be unfamiliar with the vehicle!

In a display of professionalism, the police officers decided to give the driver the benefit of the doubt and conducted a thorough check of the car. Much to their confirmation, the vehicle did, indeed, come equipped with a speed indicator, leaving the driver with no valid excuse for their excessive speed on the motorway.

Penalties for Speeding Over 100mph: Understanding the Consequences

While the question of whether driving over 100mph leads to an instant ban is answered with a “no,” it is essential to recognise that significant penalties and potential driving disqualifications are still at stake.

According to the Magistrates’ sentencing guidelines for driving in excess of 101mph on a motorway or dual carriageway, the court is advised to consider a driving disqualification ranging from 7 to 56 days. This period of disqualification reflects the gravity of the offence and serves as a strong deterrent against reckless driving behavior.

In addition to a potential disqualification, drivers caught exceeding 100mph may also face financial penalties. The court can impose fines, and the driver’s license is likely to be endorsed with a minimum of 6 penalty points. The precise sentence handed down by the Magistrates depends on various factors, including the nature of the roads involved, weather conditions, and the overall driving conduct exhibited by the individual.

When determining the appropriate sentence, the Magistrates carefully consider the circumstances surrounding the offence. They assess how the offence occurred, the impact of the driving behaviour, and the potential consequences of disqualification on the driver, their employer, workers, and any dependent family members. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that the sentencing decision takes into account both the seriousness of the offense and its potential ramifications.
