Drink driver arrested and banned for two years

A Swindon man has been banned from driving for two years after admitting to being over the drink drive limit.

Alan Dickson, aged 61, from Mannington Park, Swindon was arrested on Saturday afternoon after we received a call from a member of the public who was concerned that a male driver was intoxicated behind the wheel of his Renault Clio.

Following the call officers soon located the vehicle on Great Western Way which then drove into Mannington Park.  The car stopped and the officers approached the driver who appeared drunk.  Following a roadside breath test the man was arrested after he gave a breath sample reading of 111 mgs (80mgs is the legal limit).

He was remanded in custody at Swindon’s Gablecross Police Station and appeared before Swindon Magistrates yesterday (12/10) where he pleaded guilty to drink driving.  He was disqualified from driving for 24-months and ordered to carry out 40-hours of community service work and pay a fine of £180.

Following the sentencing, PC Andy Lee said:  “This driver was clearly intoxicated when we approached his vehicle and this sentencing is a fair reflection of the severity of his actions.
“Luckily, he did not cause a traffic collision, injure anyone else or even himself.  However, the outcome of him driving while drunk could have been far worse, possibly fatal.
“I hope this imposed ban will give the driver time to reflect on his actions so he will never make the same poor decision to drive while over the limit again.
“I’d also like to thank the member of the public who called us – information like this is vital and helps us in our work to prevent drink and drug driving.”
