Despite confirming face coverings have a “weak but positive effect” in reducing the spread of coronavirus, ministers are still deciding whether to follow Scotland’s lead and advise people to wear them when venturing outside of their homes.

“What ministers need to consider is how best to produce advice for the public on the next steps, and that work is still ongoing.”

Boris Johnson has made suggestions that face coverings will play a part in his plan to ease the UK out of the current lockdown, which is not expected to be announced before next Thursday’s review.
