Dominic Cummings has this afternoon made a statement to the UK explaining his actions during the coronavirus lockdown.
The statement comes after revelations last week that the government aide along with his wife and four year old child, traveled 260 miles to his parents’ home in Durham whilst the country is under lockdown.
Durham police have also confirmed that one of their officers spoke to Dominic Cummings’ parents on April 1st in relation to his visit.
Dominic Cummings has said that he believes he acted for the safety of his family after his wife started displaying coronavirus symptoms. He was worried that if they were both to become ill and potentially hospitalised with the virus, that they would have no child care options available in London.
He therefore made the decision, along with his wife, to make the journey to his parents’ property to be closer to family so that they could look after his four year old child if necessary.
He also explained that his parents live in one cottage, while his sister lives in a second cottage on the same land and Mr Cummings and his wife stayed in a third, separate cottage at least 50 metres away from the other properties and at no point did he enter his parents’ or his sister’s properties.
The government aide states that he believes he acted reasonably and legally at all times.
