Domestic abuse victims across Swindon are being reminded they can legally flee their homes during the period of national lockdown.
The number of people needing help from Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service (SDASS) during the first lockdown increased by 41% compared to the same period, April 1st – November 30th, in 2019 and currently house 22 vulnerable women and their families at its emergency refuge.
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Chief Executive of SDASS, Emma Rawlings reminded victims they can legally still escape the violence.
“People can escape from their perpetrator, escape a harmful situation and the abuse they have been experiencing,” she said.
“Demand has increased, the phones haven’t stopped ringing,”
“Out in the community we help literally 100 women and men every single day.
“We want people to know that they can escape from their perpetrator, escape a harmful situation and the abuse they have been experiencing”.
Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to local residents and can be called on 01793 610610.
