Doctors urge Swindon residents to take up free flu jab offer

The region’s most senior doctors have come together to call on people in Swindon and across Wiltshire to roll up their sleeves for the winter flu jab, describing it as a simple but lifesaving measure.

From today, Wednesday 1 October, those aged 65 and over – along with younger people classed as clinically at-risk, care home residents, health and care staff, and those living with someone who has a weakened immune system – can book their NHS flu vaccination free of charge.

While many will have already received an invitation to book, health leaders are urging people not to wait for the reminder and instead make an appointment straight away.

Dr Sara Bonfield, Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at Great Western Hospital, explained why the vaccine matters:

“Flu is not just a bad cold. It can be very serious, lead to severe illness and even be life-threatening. Every winter, we treat patients admitted to hospital with complications from flu, and in the most serious cases, they may require lifesaving care in intensive care. The flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of becoming seriously unwell – and protects not just yourself, but also your loved ones.”

The NHS is making it easier than ever to get vaccinated, with bookings available through the NHS App, online at nhs.uk/bookflu, over the phone via 119, or even as a same-day walk-in at selected pharmacies.

Dr Barry Coakley, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the local Integrated Care Board, said that timing is everything:

“It may seem like summer has only just ended, but flu tends to peak in the colder months. By getting protected now, we can help the most vulnerable members of our community stay well, mobile, and independent, while avoiding hospital admissions.”

Figures from the UK Health Security Agency show just how significant the vaccine can be. Last winter, it was estimated to have prevented 120,000 hospitalisations nationwide – equivalent to around two thirds of Swindon’s entire population.

For those not eligible for the free NHS jab, most high street chemists and supermarkets also offer private vaccinations.
