Despite rising unemployment and falling job vacancies, many businesses across Swindon and Wiltshire continue to struggle to fill key roles, according to recruitment specialists at The HR Dept’s Agile Recruitment team.
The team, based in Swindon, reports a surge in recruitment enquiries — particularly from industries hit by seasonal fluctuations such as hospitality, manufacturing, and warehousing — as employers grapple with ongoing staffing shortages.
Their advice? Plan ahead and start recruiting now for positions needed over the busy Christmas period or for early 2026 growth.
“While our recruitment team has seen a significant increase in demand, some employers are waiting for November’s Budget before making decisions,” said Geri Hardy, Head of Agile Recruitment at The HR Dept Swindon and its sister company in London.
“Competition for quality candidates is fierce, especially in sectors like hospitality that rely on seasonal staff. Our advice is simple: don’t wait — start recruiting now.”
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) reports that the average UK staff turnover rate is 34% annually, with the majority leaving for new roles. Sectors such as hospitality experience nearly double this turnover compared to industries like financial services.
A proactive recruitment strategy, Hardy says, not only fills vacancies faster but also improves staff retention and reduces last-minute hiring pressures.
The HR Dept’s Agile Recruitment service supports SMEs across all sectors, including finance, manufacturing, hospitality, and non-profit organisations. Around 80% of their business comes from repeat clients, reflecting the team’s trusted reputation.
Unlike traditional recruiters who charge a percentage of the candidate’s salary, The HR Dept operates a time-based fee model, allowing clients to set their own budget. On average, their fees equate to just 6% of the role’s salary, compared to the 15–25% typically charged by agencies.
“Our recruitment model is built for business owners and HR teams,” Hardy added. “We combine speed, cost-efficiency, and a deep understanding of the local market to help fill vacancies effectively.”
