This month, work will begin to improve the Whalebridge junction and Corporation Street to make them compatible with the new key regeneration developments on the Kimmerfields site next to Zurich, and the Fleming Way scheme.
Swindon Borough Council has confirmed the works will include adding an extra southbound lane on Corporation Street to enable traffic to go straight on past Fleming Way and up towards Princes Street.
It is hoped that this additional lane will improve the road network around the town centre and also improve the efficiency of bus services in the area.
The junction will also improve the cycle network through the town centre by creating a dedicated cycle lane from the western end of Fleming Way and south on Princes Street.
While the junction itself will not fully close on 31st July, it will use lane closures to ensure work can be carried out as quickly and safely as possible.
A second phase of work will begin on 14th August which will see the full closure of Corporation Street. Swindon Borough Council’s spokesperson advised that ‘this work and closure are aimed to be completed before Christmas.’
The closure has been deemed necessary in order to enable utility work to be carried out at the same time – meaning the closure will be shorter and less obstructive.
Pedestrian access and access into Unity Place will be maintained but a diversion will be put in place for other vehicles. Bus route changes will also be detailed by
