Council Issues Vital Voting Information for Swindon Residents Ahead of General Election

As Swindon prepares for the upcoming general election on Thursday, 4th July, the council is issuing a crucial reminder: voters must present an approved form of photo ID at polling stations.

This marks the first general election under the new mandate of the Elections Act 2022, which requires photo identification to cast a vote.

Acceptable forms of photo ID include passports, photographic driving licences, biometric immigration documents, and specific concessionary travel passes. A full list is available on Swindon Borough Council’s website.

To be eligible to vote, residents must be registered by Tuesday, 18th June. Those who need to register can do so on the Government’s website. Registration is a one-time requirement unless an individual has changed their name, address, or nationality.

Voters can use expired photo IDs provided they still bear a reasonable resemblance to the holder. The name on the ID must match the one used for voter registration, and only original documents will be accepted.

For residents without suitable photo ID, a Voter Authority Certificate can be obtained free of charge. Applications for this certificate must be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday, 26th June. Applications can be made via the Government’s website or by contacting the Council for an application form. Forms are available at the Civic Offices reception in Euclid Street during office hours (9am to 4pm).

Residents can also apply for postal or proxy voting online. The deadline for postal vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday, 19th June, while the deadline for proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday, 26th June. National Insurance numbers or other identity documents are required when registering for postal or proxy voting, and proxy voters must bring their own ID when voting at a polling station.

Sam Mowbray, Swindon Borough Council’s Returning Officer, stated, “With less than six weeks until the general election, we urge Swindon residents to ensure they are registered to vote by 18th June and have the appropriate ID ready. Some voters may have used their ID during the recent Borough elections, and these can be used again on 4th July. However, with a higher expected turnout, it’s vital that everyone checks they have the necessary ID.

“We encourage every eligible elector to be prepared and to remind friends, family, and neighbours who may need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate before 26th June. This certificate is valid for 10 years and can be used for all future elections.”
