Construction restarts at retirement development

Construction work has now restarted at Gilbert Place, a McCarthy and Stone Retirement Living Plus development in Swindon, as the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities continues the gradual remobilisation of its build activities.

Construction was paused at the Lowry Way site in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown.

Paul Marshall, Senior Site Manager for Gilbert Place said the restart was a welcome one. “We are working with a reduced team to ensure social distancing rules can be enforced, and we are adapting well to the new working conditions.

“The safety and wellbeing of the public and everyone who works on our sites remains our top priority. We are well prepared and ready to deliver the new homes for the increasing number of people who are looking to downsize.”

Gilbert Place is one of many sites McCarthy and Stone will recommence construction on this month, with more planned for October as part of the company’s phased approach to restarting.

Currently, there are c.3 million people in the UK over the age of 65 who are looking to downsize, so McCarthy and Stone’s gradual remobilisation is a well-timed one.

Paul Marshall continues: “The commitment from our colleagues and contractors in Swindon throughout this most challenging period had been exceptional, and I would like to thank them for all their support. We are pleased to get back to what we do best, and that’s enriching the lives of our customers by creating new homes that are more suited to their needs and which will allow them to live safely and independently for longer.”

The new development will comprise a mix of one and two-bed apartments exclusively designed for the over 70s. Apartments will be available to reserve off-plan summer 2021, with first occupants expected in early 2022.

Once complete, the development will feature a communal lounge, ideal for socialising with newfound friends; a Guest Suite for when residents have visitors to stay; beautifully maintained gardens, and a retail shop on the ground floor for added convenience. An Estate Manager will take care of the day-to-day running of the development, while secure entry systems and 24-hour emergency call points will provide added peace-of-mind.

Just a short drive away from the development is the heart of Swindon Old Town, which is home to plenty of cultural, leisure, shopping and social activities. A variety of sporting events and activities can also be found close to the development, such as Broome Manor golf course, as well as woods, parks, playgrounds and fields.
