Swindon Borough Council has been given £19m by Homes England to build a new road connecting Commonhead roundabout by Great Western Hospital with the New Eastern Villages.
The £31m Southern Connector Road, which will be funded by Homes England, the Department for Transport and Local Growth Fund (£11.6m) will be in place before 6,800 homes, six primary schools and a secondary school are built as part of the New Eastern Villages.
A new proposed junction could be built on Wanborough Road to prevent rat-running and traffic calming in the surrounding villages will also be considered.
The new, two-way road will avoid known areas of archaeological interest and measures will be in place to protect local wildlife. There will also be a dedicated cycle route linking to Swindon’s wider cycle network.
Work is due to begin in Spring 2021 and will be completed by Winter 2022.
