Significant progress has been made on the improvement works at Coate roundabout and its surrounding area, which began in April 2023.
Although the roadworks have been increasing the time taken to navigate the area, these enhancements aim to enhance traffic flow and overall infrastructure with the works expected to be completed later this year.
As part of this programme Swindon Borough Council are making a number of improvements, these include:
- waterproofing of Coate bridge – next to Coate roundabout (eastbound carriageway only, towards Commonhead roundabout)
- upgrading the traffic signals on Coate roundabout
- closure of the two subways under Queens Drive and Marlborough Road
- the installation of a new toucan crossing, footway and cycleway links on Queen’s Drive
- resurfacing patches along Queens Drive adjacent to the new toucan crossing
- resurfacing patches along Marlborough Road between Commonhead roundabout and Coate roundabout
To enable the contractors to complete the resurfacing work, the section between Marlborough Road and Commonhead roundabout will undergo several overnight closures, allowing for the necessary resurfacing activities.
Motorists will be guided through designated diversion routes between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am on the specified dates.
In order to minimise disruption to emergency services and those requiring access to Great Western Hospital, special arrangements have been made to ensure their uninterrupted passage throughout the construction period.
The scheduled resurfacing works will be conducted overnight between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am on the following dates:
- July 18th to 20th: Adjacent to Dayhouse Lane (Marlborough Road between Coate and Commonhead roundabouts)
- July 20th to 27th: Great Western Hospital junction (Marlborough Road between Coate and Commonhead roundabouts)
- July 20th to 27th: Commonhead roundabout exit (Marlborough Road between Coate and Commonhead roundabouts)
- July 28th to 31st: Opposite Woodbine Terrace (Marlborough Road between Coate and Commonhead roundabouts)
- August 1st and 2nd: Queens Drive approach to the new crossing on both sides of the road
- August 22nd (until 6:00 am on August 23rd): Coate bridge exit off Coate roundabout (Marlborough Road between Coate and Commonhead roundabouts)
