Christmas Set to Sparkle Across Swindon with a Season of Festivities

The holiday season is about to take centre stage in Swindon, promising a dazzling array of festive events that will brighten the town and bring joy to residents of all ages. It all begins on Saturday, 23rd November, when the town centre Christmas light switch-on marks the official start of Swindon’s Yuletide celebrations.

This year’s switch-on, located next to the Cenotaph in the town centre, will feature a truly special guest — Swindon’s very own Dame, David Ashley, from the Wyvern Theatre’s Cinderella pantomime. From 4.30pm to 6.30pm, the town will be alight with festive spirit as David illuminates Swindon’s Christmas lights. The celebrations will be hosted by Swindon 105.5, with entertainment from Swindon Dance, the Salvation Army, and the Holy Rood School Choir. Rumour has it that a certain jolly man in red will also make a guest appearance!

After the switch-on, families are invited to participate in a lantern parade leading to the Brunel Shopping Centre, where children can post their Christmas letters. This marks the start of the town centre Christmas Market, managed by LSD Promotions. Visitors can enjoy unique gift stalls, a food court serving festive treats, and a backdrop of live music and entertainment. The market will operate Tuesday to Sunday, with late-night trading on Fridays and Saturdays.

Meanwhile, the Brunel Shopping Centre will be offering a magical experience with Santa’s Grotto from 16th November through to Christmas Eve, as well as a special Letters to Santa post box. For the 23rd November market launch, the Brunel will extend its opening hours until 7pm.

Further afield, Lydiard Park kicks off its festive season on 29th November with a light switch-on event. The park’s Christmas programme includes A Country House Christmas, Ghost Stories at Christmas, and Carols by Candlelight. Full details are available on the park’s website.

STEAM Museum will host its own holiday spectacular on 7th and 8th December, featuring Santa’s Storytime and a special performance of The Snowman with music from the Aldbourne Band on 14th December.

Another highlight is the return of the Enchanted Gardens Light Trail at the historic Town Gardens from 29th November, presented by the South Swindon Parish Council. This magical journey through illuminated trees and light sculptures is perfect for families.

Swindonians can also look forward to the Old Town Christmas Festival on 24th November, organised by the Old Town Business Association.

Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, remarked: “This year’s Christmas season will be the best Swindon has seen in years. With so much to do and see, every day can be a festive family outing. Our hope is to bring joy and unity to our diverse community.”

Laura Hepple, Brunel Centre Manager, added: “We’re thrilled to help launch Christmas in Swindon. Our elves have been busy, and the centre is stocked for all your gifting needs.”

It’s time to wrap up warm, get out there, and soak up the festive cheer. Swindon is ready to make this holiday season unforgettable for everyone!
