Chris Whitty to set out possible new lockdown measures in tv address to the nation today

Professor Chris Whitty is expected to warn us that Britain stands at a “critical point” in the coronavirus pandemic.

In a televised briefing later today, the chief medical officer for England is expected to explain how the virus is spreading in the UK and the potential scenarios that could unfold as winter approaches.

It is understood that any potential new restrictions announced today could be in place as early as tomorrow with the Prime Minister scheduled to appear at a press conference.

New national measures are thought to include seeing pubs and restaurants ordered to close at 10pm – similar to the measures already in place Newcastle and the North East.

This move comes after another 3,899 positive cases of coronavirus were recorded in the UK in the most recent 24 hour period with the UK death toll now at 41,777.
