Changes to your benefits in February – what you need to know

There are going to be numerous changes to benefits and pensions payments through 2018. We will try and keep you up to date with everything you need to know.

Universal Credit wait time reduced

The six-week standard wait for someone’s first payment of Universal Credit is being cut to five weeks from today (February 1st).

Your Holiday Starts Now

This is due to the government ending the seven day waiting period where people were not paid – meaning that a claim will start on the day of the application.

Tax Free Childcare

On February 14th Tax Free Childcare opens to all eligible families who have children under the age of 12.

You’re usually eligible for Tax Free Childcare  if all of the following apply:

Your child:

  • is under 12, or 17 if they’re registered as having a disability
  • usually lives with you

You (and your partner, if you have one):

  • are 16 or over
  • live or work in the UK
  • are employed or self-employed
  • are over 21 and earn on average at least £120 a week, unless in your first year of self-employment. Different rates apply if you’re under 21 or an apprentice
  • earn less than £100,000 a year each
  • don’t get other support with your childcare, including from a childcare voucher or salary sacrifice scheme
