Attention, business owners and managers! Changes are on the horizon regarding how Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service will respond to automatic fire alarms.
Starting from 1st April, alarms sounding at low-risk commercial premises will only prompt an emergency response if there is a confirmed suspicion of a fire, either through a 999 call or other verification.
This adjustment aims to curb the number of unnecessary call-outs to false alarms. Responding to false alarms poses risks to both the public and firefighters, disrupts business operations, and could potentially delay responses to genuine emergencies.
However, it’s crucial to note that automatic fire alarm activations at domestic and residential buildings, premises where people sleep, and identified higher-risk properties will continue to receive prompt attention from fire crews.
Emma Turner, the Protection (Improvement) Manager, stressed the importance of maintaining alarm systems and implementing appropriate safety measures. She highlighted that in the previous year alone, the Service attended nearly 2,000 automatic fire alarms in commercial premises that didn’t necessitate an emergency response.
“We need business owners and managers to understand the importance of keeping their alarm systems in good working order, and having the right processes in place to keep their staff and premises safe,” said Turner.
